®

Fourth-generation Legacy model line fully redesigned for 2005 and led by 2.5 GT and 2.5 GT Limited Sedan and Wagon models powered by 250-hp intercooled/turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer engine; Legacy 2.5 i Sedan and Wagon and 2.5 i Limited Sedan and Wagon models are powered by revised 168-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine with Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) system.

Revised chassis with longer wheelbase (105.1 inches compared to 104.3 for previous model), wider track, improved steering response and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD).
Legacy 2.5 i models feature standard 16-inch alloy wheels; 2.5 GT models use 17-inch alloy wheels, quicker steering ratio and larger vented 4-wheel disc brakes.

Front seat side-impact air bags and side curtain air bags standard for all models; dual-stage front air bags select deployment stage based on occupant weight category.

All-new interior design features enhanced materials and expanded standard content.
Limited models add automatic climate control, leather-trimmed upholstery, power glass moonroof, 4-stage heated front seats and other amenities (automatic climate control and heated seats are also standard on 2.5 GT).

New optional 5-speed electronic automatic transmission for Legacy 2.5 GT models features SPORTSHIFT controls using floor shift or steering wheel buttons.
This transmission is teamed with the Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) version of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, which uses a planetary center differential to divide power 45 percent front/55 percent rear and an electronically controlled continuously variable hydraulic clutch to vary the torque split in response to driving conditions.

New focus on performance enables Outback to compete with wider variety of crossover models and SUVs. New Outback 2.5 XT and 2.5 XT Limited models are powered by 250-hp intercooled/turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer engine.
Top-of-line Outback 3.0 R Sedan, 3.0 R L.L.Bean Edition and 3.0 R VDC Limited Wagon models powered by new 250-hp 6-cylinder engine; model line includes Outback 2.5 i and 2.5 i Limited Wagon models powered by revised 168-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine with Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) system.
